Back in April, in the "We're Waiting" thread on current projects I posted this picture of a headboard I was planning to make:
Image

Well, I've finally started. I've got all the pieces cut out, all the mortises and tenons cut, and a start on fitting them together. Still need to rabbet the regions for the cane, as well as route a groove for the cane and spline. But at least it's started.

Image

This is sized for a queen bed, which makes it a little under 72" at the widest point, 60" at the legs that attach to the bed frame. 8/4/cherrythroughout

Absolutely beautiful design...did you design it or find it? Are you doing the caning or do you have a source? Very impressive as are all your projects! Thanks for keeping us updated.

Looking forward

It's an original design. Maybe I'm just not very good at following directions :-)

I'm using machine woven cane - I want to finish in this lifetime. I get it at Woodworker's Supply in Albuquerque - relatively convenient for me.

Really nice!
I like the joinery.
I have never worked with cherry before. Is it easy to work with?

Can't wait to see the finish.

Is there going to be a foot board?

Awesome design..............looks like Japanese influence?

Love it!

Zulu:
Cherry is generally nice to work with. It cuts nicely, sands easily, takes a variety of finishes without a lot of bother. It has a tendency to burn when cutting or routing unless you're really careful. It's also reasonably hard, making the end product fairly durable. Less expensive than exotic imports, but at the higher end for domestic hardwoods.

At this point there is no plan for a footboard, but who knows what the future will bring?

Reelinron -
Yes, heavily influenced by Asian forms. Real Japanese joinery would no doubt be far more complex. I"m not sure I've ever seen caning used in Japanese furniture, though. Some sort of woven rattan pattern would probably be more appropriate.

cherry does work nicely - the only draw back i see is that it darkens over time - especially if it is direct sunlight.

Cherry ages to a wonderful warm colour I often let my projects tan in the sun before final finishing, thats is my 2 cents.

Drstrip make sure you post when it is all finished it should be spectacular.

I had hoped to post some more progress my now, but my router died. I know it may seem unreal, but I have only two routers, a DW621 for hand-held work and a Porter Cable 7518 (that's the 3 1/4HP beast) in my router table. (I know people with 6 or more routers. No idea why.) The DW621 died 5 days ago. The soft-start works, spinning the router up to speed, but then it just dies. There's an electronic control module that appears to have two stages, one for the soft-start, one for the continuous run. The second stage seems to have died. I've ordered a replacement module (30% of the price of new router) and I hope that does the trick. If so, I'll be posting progress soon.

I resemble that remark.
2 PC 890's (one fixed base one plunge), 1 Milwaukee body grip (for construction type use & got it really cheap), Ridgid palm router, 1 old Craftsman (was my dad's) 1 Montgomery Wards (free), and, 6 is "normal". Not counting Mototools, drywall cut out, ... and I do not know how many router bits picked up some sets really cheap (SWMBO* says too many).
I DO NOT HAVE A TOOL FETISH (don't ask my wife).

Now that my router is working again, the headboard is making progress. Here it is, all glued up this time. (Yeah, it looks like the previous photo but all the joints are closed in this shot).
Image
I needed the router to cut the grooves for the cane, which had to be done before gluing.

I've got the wash coat of shellac on it, to be followed by Knipfer's "Rude and Crude". (Whatever happened to Dave, anyway?)

Beautiful
Leave it outside in the bright sunlight it will "tan" beautifully quickly.

Incredible job !!! Well done !!! As for ever making a footboard to mach it, I would advise against it. Something that would match would undoubtedly have some pretty sharp "points" or "edges" that would be brutal to find with a shin or thigh in the middle of the night ...... :( :( :(

But excellent workmanship on this piece. Can't wait to see it in it's final "tone"......

That's certainly what I tell myself when I'm not eager to do this again :-)

6 routers, huh! I have 7! But one is missing a collet. It's a Porter Cable, I need to order a new collet.
