Usually, before I spend a lot of money on quality wood for a new project, I make a mock up from cheaper construction grade lumber. The mock up allows me to learn, and make mistakes at relatively low cost; but just as importantly, it gives me the courage to proceed with a new technique or design because I’m not using expensive wood.

I can’t emphasize enough the value of making a first off, throwaway version of a new challenging project. Often, having served their purpose, these mock ups end up in the woodstove. Sometimes, more rarely, they get a coat of finish and end up either in the shop or the front room as useful but less than ideal end products.

This particular chair is not suitable for use, for a number of reasons, and so I have dubbed it, “le chaise d’enfer” (the chair from heqq). But instead of the wood stove, I have a more interesting immolation in mind.

Stay tuned.

The chair looks good. proportions look good also.
I will say the spindles for the back look a little small, not sure it would hold me.

Looking forward to the next step and post.

Good strategy, given the price of nice woods these days. (Even construction lumber is getting pricey)
Will the seat be scooped/sculpted, or left flat?
Is the top back laminated or steam bent? (I think I see your steam chamber peaking out from behind the chair on the floor).

And if you're inviting critiques -
I find the wings of the back a bit disquieting without spindles close to the ends. Nothing wrong with it - some non-traditional designs do that sort of thing all the time, but on this chair it seems odd.

I do that for any complex project. Wanted a pair of end tables for the living room so built one out of scrap ply and 2 by scraps first.
Came out OK so made the final ones and the test one looked good enough to keep for another location. Have the pix but have problem with "login" to Tinypix and could only get the one pix for a link.
