Haven't posted this kind of thing lately. Local auction coming up next month and thought y'all might like to take a look. This is one piece that caught my eye. Flame Mahogany Jackson Press. Don't know the age, but likely mid 1800's.

Gene,
My first view of "Flame Mahogany", I didn't even know it existed.
Is the Red color natural or is it achieved with a stain or finish?

Flame Mahogany is very rare these days and really expensive (about $30 sqrft for veneer).

Nearly all mid 1800's furniture such as this was finished with Shellac (French polish), since nothing else existed (or a natural oil), except some stains. That said, I haven't seen it in person so I don't know if it was stained but I rather doubt it, since a stain would tend to hide the grain, and that's not something that was desirable. So I'd opine this is the natural coloration, although the camera lighting may have made it brighter. :)

That is just beautiful. That is the focal point of any room ................or maybe the house!

Let us know what it ends up going for if you find out!

These would usually be in the dining room to store linens for the table, etc. Some would also store china, etc. much like any china cabinet, lots of size and design variations. I doubt I'll find out what the winning bid is, but I'd guess somewhere around $2,000 for this one.

If I was in the market, I would buy that piece for that kind of money considering what anything new/cheesy would cost.

Good point. I haven't bought any new furniture in about 15 years or more, except for a couple of recliners. So I don't really keep track of current prices for new stuff. Most of our furniture either I made, or we bought antiques at various auctions (including Stevens) and estate sales.

PS: Did you go to the website and look around?

Didn't think of it Gene, but I will try to give a look today. If I had't built most of my furniture, I would have bought antique stuff over new.

There's a few other pieces, that aren't the usual over-the-top Victorian stuff, that I thought were interesting also. A lot of what you see on antique auctions like this needs a large old mansion to put it in, but sometimes they will have design features that can be incorporated into something a woodworker might want to make for themselves. :)

Some of the carving on the furniture is amazing! If I could only carve like that!
