Went to get the Sunday paper this morning as usual, but had to take a detour across the lawn around a big ol' hardwood that had fallen across my driveway sometime last nite. :x
Most of the trunk is back in the woods at about a 45deg angle. Took down some smaller trees and undergrowth with it. A real tangled mess. Good thing I have a cousin with heavy equipment to clear this thing. :)

Not likely. Got a better look at it yesterday. It's a Pin Oak. Trunk is about 30" dia. with large main branches. If nobody local wants it for firewood, I'll just leave it to rot. I don't have the equipment or money to saw it up into lumber even if I had a use for it.

Here's a couple after pics. My walking stick laying on the trunk is exactly 6' long. The root ball is to the left about 8 ft( out of the pic. Diameter at my stick is a little bigger than I originally thought - a little over 36".

Looking towards the top end of the tree, the main trunk disappears into the undergrowth. Estimate main trunk length at around 30ft. Doing the math, the trunk looks to weigh around 8700lbs. I won't be trying to move this monster.

At least I don't have to detour around the mess anymore. :D

I want to live in the woods.
Suburbia suks. :x
I would take an 8' section of that and slab it out in 2" to 3" slabs.
I'd have to be able to pick it up first.

Yep. Which is why I retired here 17 yrs ago. :-D Anyway, according to the Woodweb volume calculator, the trunk has somewhere around 1800bf in it, but there's probably only 1500bf or so that would be useful for something other than keeping warm. I'll never know.

I can only imagine what beautiful flame patters must reside in those huge crotches.

You're probably right. I might take a look later this year and see if it has any burls I can cut off, but anything beyond that is just too much for me to handle. Doesn't look like it's totally stable right now and could be dangerous. We'll see. Wouldn't mind having a nice burl to play with. :)
