is one. Once learned, owned always. Techniques and experience, attention to detail and practice are pretty much qualities and traits of a woodworker, and, like riding a bike all that can translate into working another medium. Once you have the concepts in hand branch out and explore, extend your horizon. Use turning techniques and explore alabaster. Here is a bunch of information on doing just that.

This is an amazing coincidence since some time ago I was given a couple nice size chunks of alabaster. I've never quite understood how I could go about finishing a piece from the lathe with a finish that would resist, at least to some degree, scratching since the pieces I have are so soft I can scratch them with my finger nail.

The only caveat I would add to the article is that one should definitely use good lung protection from the stone dust.

Thanks for a great link. Now I have an idea of what to do with my stone.
