Anybody used Behlen Pore-O-Pac grain filler? Looking to stain some oak a very dark walnut color, but don't want the oak grain look. They have a walnut color, which I'm thinking about using and then staining the wood with solvent based stain. Couple of questions though.

1. If you've used it, how did you like it? Did it give you the results you were looking for?

2. Did you thin it before using? Or straight out of the container?

3. Some sites recommend using over a wash coat sealer. Did you do this? If so, did you use shellac or a sanding sealer/thinned poly?

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi John!

why didn't you make your project with some of that walnut you have stashed? :D

Best thing would be to try some on scrap and see what happens

On oak I have used Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty it seams to take the stain* about like the oak.
I am sure that other brands will also work.
Fill it then sand off the excess, then finish as normal.

*I use oil based stain

I've used it and it does work, I didn't thin it.
But it was very difficult to sand, even after a long
drying time.
