block plain, would you buy a high angle or a low angle plane and why? There has to be uses for both or manufacturers would't make them for the market.

Are you talking about a plain block plane or a plain block plain?? I'm scratching my head at a high angle. Looks like a low angle wood be better for end grain and it would also work with the grain but a high angle would be hard to push....sooo low angle for me.

Good question!

DON2LAUGHS: Thanks for your response even though it might seem lonely. Indeed I did, carelessly, mix up my words. The puzzler was more a question of use, preference and opinion and thus pretty open ended.
If memory serves a low angle block plane is very useful in addressing end grain situations and for general use. A high angle block plane shines when it works high figure grain because it has much less a tendency to tear out.
Having a choice of only one I would agree that the choice would be a low angle plane BUT keeping in mind "you can't have too many tools" I would certainly want a high angle plane also.

Hey Guys,

The Stanley #60 1/2 low angle block plane is the only one I reach for.

It was the first edge tool (after a pocket knife) that I ever used, and the first one I bought with my allowance. I now have two of them, as it was one of those things Pop left to me that I didn't need, but couldn't part with.

Our planes started out identical, but over the years of use, they started to look different. They were the most different when he passed away, but in the years since then, I've used his as much as my own, and they are starting to look similar again. :|

Cheers,
Tom
