Hey Folks,

Here's a seasonal puzzler for you.

What is Corpse Finger, and what does it have to do with woodworking?

As it's easily found on the internet, you are on your honor to find the answer elsewhere.

Cheers,
Tom

TMS: The only time I've heard the term " dead mans fingers" IIRC was on a cooking show with JULIA CHILD. She was working with seafood and was showing how to harvest and prepare crab meat. She broke the crab apart and proceeded to scoop our some innards she said were inedible and called them dead mans fingers. I have no clue as to how that would relate to woodworking other than a wooden mallet is used sometimes to crack various parts of a shell like the claws or the legs.
Good one TMS I'm looking forward to the answer.

The only thing that I know about that is called dead man's fingers is a type of mushroom that looks like a handful of fingers poking up out of the ground. Not the slightest idea as to how they would relate to woodworking so probably an incorrect answer. :)

Hey Bob,

Well, you go the first half right, Corpse Finger is a mushroom. It is the fruiting body of a fungus that produces the black streaks in spalted maple, poplar, and alder.

Another spalting fungus is Turkey Tail. It produces a bleached white effect. Often the two occur together and the results can be striking.

Cheers,
Tom
