Hey Folks,

It's been too long since there was a new puzzler post. Sorry 'bout that, but you are all so knowledgeable that it's tough to stump you.

I'm thinking about another steam bent project for my shop, and so I've come up with a little quiz for you.
First, for simplicity's sake let's limit the discussion to end pressure bending versus free bending. In end pressure bending, a device, usually a steel strap, is used to keep the wood in compression and to protect the outside of the bend from tension failure. All of the bending strain is therefore compressive.

So, given the above, rank (highest to lowest) the following species in order of endwise compressibility (bend-ability).

Black willow
Eucalyptus
Overcup oak (Southern)
Paper birch
Red oak
Sitka spruce
Sweet gum
White oak
Winged elm
Yellow birch

The usual rules apply, no fair using the internet, your first answer is your final answer, and if no one gets it, I keep the points. :D

Good luck,
Tom

Don't know a thing about this subject and these woods but I hate to see a puzzler go unnoticed so here goes.
White Oak
Red Oak
Overcup Oak
Winged elm
Sitka Spruce
Eucalyptus
Sweet Gum
Yellow Birch
Paper Birch
Black Willow

That's by WAG and I'm sticking to it.

I'm assuming these are all in the dry and not green wood.

Red oak
White oak
Overcup oak (Southern)
Eucalyptus
Yellow birch
Paper birch
Sitka spruce
Sweet gum
Winged elm
Black willow

He!!, I dunno - just a SWAG on my part.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for playing. Sorry I haven't been replying on the spot, but while I was traveling this weekend, I blew my knee out on the dance floor with Kris. So I've been living the past 48 hrs or so in a drug induced haze, and focusing on anything is a bit of a struggle just now as I wait for the docs to decide what to do next.

So if you've posted an answer, rest assured that I will post corrections as soon as I am able. If you haven't answered, you now have some extra time to give it a whirl. Even if you don't recognize the species, you might know more than you think, so don't be afraid to try.

Cheers,
Tom

Very sorry to hear about your knee, Tom, says the voice of experience. (But not from dancing!!)

Don't forget RICE -- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Been there, done that.

Follow the Dr's orders. They do have reasons for their orders.

Hey Folks
Well, I guess I'm a little disappointed that more of you didn't give the puzzler a try, but thanks to everyone that did. I'll try again if you will.

Here is the correct order of the species in order of decreasing bend-ability.

Red oak
Paper birch
Overcup oak (Southern)
Winged elm
White oak
Yellow birch
Sweet gum
Black willow
Eucalyptus
Sitka spruce

Tom

TMS: Just for curiositys sake, where did you come up with the list you show, and how did you determine the bendability schedule?

Hey Newtooth,

Sorry, I was kind of rushed to finish up last night. The source of the info is from a very good pamphlet produced, in 1957, by the US Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Products Laboratory called, Bending Solid Wood to Form. It contains more information on bending wood than most of us will ever need.

Thanks Tom, I don't think I got even one in the right position,
but I did enjoy trying.

Thanks again

Tom, I enjoy the challenge. While I certainly don't know many of the answers, I still enjoy being "puzzled".

How's your knee, by the way?

Hey Verna,

The knee is better thanks, and is also not as badly damaged as we once thought. I tore the meniscus, dislocated the knee cap and strained the hamstring tenons, but the ligaments are thankfully intact. I've nearly weaned myself off the pain meds, but ibuprophen and I are still too familiar, and probably will be until my physical therapy is done.
