One of my buddies from the turning club came over today so we had a nice lunch, chat and some quality time out in the shop. Ron is tutoring me in the fine art of pen turning. These are my first two efforts using a bolt action pen kit from Penn State:

The material is deer antler I got from a neighbor. It's great stuff to turn and polishes up nicely. I don't think I like the scale of the style all that much but they're sure fun to make.

I do intend to at least try to get enough inventory in these and a couple other styles, perhaps more on the order of slimline pens and give it a go peddling them at a couple upcoming Christmas craft bizaars. Are you interested in one?

Absolutely. What are you asking for them?

Dennis,

I sell pens at a local farmer's market, along with other stuff. The bolt action pens sell well at the $25.00 to $35.00 range, slim lines in the $10.00 to $20.00 range. I have turned antler, but phew, does it smell awful. So, I do antler on request, but charge a premium to do it, 'bout twice as much. What finish are you using? They look good!!

Actually I didn't use any finish at all, Bob. Just sanded to 320 than buffed with 0000 steel wool.

Hey Dennis,

Try a bit of dark wax, I think you'll like it.

Dennis, I'd love to get one of those for Nick! If you have any "in stock" that you want to sell, bring 'em to Tom's in June and I'll look at 'em when Nick's tossing back cool ones with Tom et al. If I happen to learn how to turn a pen between now and then, I'll let you know.

OK, Jamie, but if we're to continue this dialogue we should take it to email or PM. Don't think the forum is a proper place for commercializing (grin).
