I'm not a turner, but do have a lathe. I know that many times bowls are turned green, allowed to dry and then final turned. What about pens? Should the blanks be completely dry before turning? Thanks

Most of the pens I have truned have been dry, but a few have been reletive green and did just fine. One small hint DO NOT use the friction finish theyn sell for pens it does not hold up, I usualy use spray laqure on a separate spindle.

I have some very spalted maple that I think will make some cool pens, but it is still pretty green. Might try some of the less spalted stuff to see how it does. If it doesn't turn out well, I'll dry them out.

Thanks

John,
You can always dry pen blanks in the Microwave.
Do a google search for the particulars
Or check out
http://www.penturners.org/
For more than you ever wanted to know about pens, lol

Just be sure the microwave is a shop unit or SWMBO will not be pleased.

Nailer - I know what you mean so I have already bought one at auction for $5 to avoid that problem.

Daddy - I'll keep that in mind. Most of the heavily spalted stuff cut like the unspalted wood on the table saw. Some of the punky stuff was obvious in how it cut on the TS.
