As most of you know, I've been laid off for about 3 months now. With no calls for interviews, and feeling like I'm throwing my resume into one black hole after another, I've started thinking of other sources of income.

Pen turnings:
From Left: Zebra Wood Pencil and Pen, Purple heart Pen and Pencil, Satin finish Kingwood Pen, Curly something pencil and pen, and Lignum Vietae Pencil and pen.

There was supposed to have been a Kingwood Pencil, but it blew up on me during the prep. The 2 lignums were actually a present for Jo. They were made from a cut off of a shadow box we'd built in memory of her Mother a few years ago.

The two Curly somethings didn't take the finish too well and look like they have no finish at all. A very open grain wood, and I still have some more.

All pen sets are Slimline Pro, 8mm.

They look great from this side, Ice. Good luck with the new venture.

Frank,

Nice job, and good luck! I think your "Curly something" is Curly Pyinma, 'least looks like one I did last year. Mine sold in a hurry, so you might have good luck on yours, too.

That's it Bob. I'd still like to go back and refinish it though. That stuff has such an open grain that it just drinks the finish deep into it.

I took them by a drug store in Torrington today before heading back to Aurora. They have a small gift shop on the side. Had a talk with the Manager and got the same old story.

"I can get them from China complete with a wooden gift box, sell them for less than you are asking and make a much higher profit."

I told him I hope they build a Walgreens and a Wal Mart in town and see how he likes getting undercut. Rolling Eyes

On open grain and oily woods, I use Mylands Sealer. Works well for me. Seems to be compatible with the different finishes I have tried, both shellac based and lacquer based.

Thanks Bob, I'll give that a shot. I use Mylands friction polish and wax, but hadn't thought about a sealer.

Frank,

You might try trophy or engraving shops in your area. Sometimes the take on stuff from locals. Just a thought.

Frank,

They look great.

I'm in same boat as you as far as job goes. Confused

I did manage to take the postal exam a few monthas ago for a rural carrier and managed to get hired as a substitute. Position they call an RCA. Rural Carrier Associate.

Not enough hours to feed family or pay mortgage but everything helps.
Only guaranteed 2 days a month but the money is good. This month it will be 17 days counting training time.

Good Luck,
