American Woodworker has a good article about moisture meters. Pin vs. pinless, tips on how to use them, and reviews on a few of each type. I need to buy one, and I'd recommend anyone else that dries their own timber should have one also. Smile

Wait a minute.
You're telling me I can't look an my 1" thick plank that I slabbed off last year at this time and say "you're dry now"?

Wink

I don't subscribe, but I'm thankful that the article appears to be posted in its entirety online. Thanks!

The chart at the end ( click to enlarge), is very informative comparing features and prices.

Btw, I also found this handy ref. for estimating the age of some common species without boring them.
http://forestry.about.com/od/silviculture/a/Estimating-A-Trees-Age.htm

And this: http://treetalk.mortonarb.org/areas-of-interest/do-you-know/how-to-tell-a-trees-age/556/

They use diameter @ 4.5' x a growth factor (by species ) to get a rough estimate. But there are many caveats. See the comments/ Q&A.

Depends on what "dry" means to you. While it's interesting to have a reading, until you consult the relative humidity readings, it could still be wet at 6% or dry at 12.

Houses with central heat/air are different than garage shops like I had in MArysville, and swamp coolers, well....

I try and keep my shop at about 50%, and sticker a couple weeks in advance when I bring in from the wood room where things get to 20% or less in the winter.
