During the recent royal wedding, the millions around the world saw that Prince William chose to wear a uniform that included the famous British "red coat."
Many people have asked, "Why did the British wear red coats in battle?"
A long time ago, Britain and France were at war. During one battle, the French captured a British Colonel. They took him to their headquarters, and the French General began to question him. Finally, as an afterthought, the French General asked, "Why do you British officers all wear red coats? Don't you know the red material makes you easier targets for us to shoot at?"
In his casual, matter-of-fact, way, the officer informed the General that the reason British officers wear red coats is so that if they are wounded, the blood won't show, and the men they are leading won't panic.
And that is why, from that day forward, all French uniform trousers are BROWN _________________ Paul G

| It is a funny joke, but remember that the French bailed us out of two (2) wars, neither of which we would have won without them: the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. |

That's only because they didn't like Britain (still don't!) more than that they liked America!

Guess I missed that 1812-1815 intervention. Don't understand how they did much, since they didn't have a lot of fleet to help us after Trafalgar in 1805, as they had under De Grasse at Yorktown. Their land forces were pretty much occupied in Russia in 1812, as you might recall. DeGrasse paid the price after defeats by Hood and Rodney, however.
Treaty of Ghent in December 1814 reverted to the status quo ante for Britain and the US. Napoleon had been sent to Elba in April. Sounds to me like they lost that war. After the hundred days, it was confirmed! |
