A fixture to hold a brace and bit to large odd shaped objects to start a hole. Perhaps to drill holes in ship masts or large bridge timbers.
Thats my WAG !

I think it is a small chain vice for a brace and bit but, I have no idea on what it might be used for.

I think you guys know as much as I do, lets see if something more definitive comes along....

I found this among my Fathers tools. Don't know if it belonged to his grandfather who was an all arounder, or if he picked it up in a garage sale.

I saw something similar on ebay, and it said it was for drilling pipe, much like Newtooths WAG. But I'm curious to see if someone out there can nail it down. So a point for everyone!

I think you're all off base. That is clearly a pit bull tie-out that has been overwhelmed by Spuds' repeated charging at the end of the chain. Without the additional three feet of stake to drive into the ground, it is now clearly useless for its originally intended purpose and should be relegated to things like drilling in cast iron pipe.

It's for drilling metal with a brace. The chain tightens slightyly as you crank the brace pulling the bit further into the metal. I know for a fact this is exactly what this tool is. I have several including special collets to hold metal drill bits as the one end is a standard auger and the other end is bored to hold the collets which in turn hold standard metal drill bits.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

thanks Rick! Enjoy the prize, you can read it over and over again!
Make sure you do a big crowd roar at the same time!!!

I appreciate the answer we almost got there, but not quite as specifically.

I guess I better lift my game and get back into the puzzler.

Sorry for my lack of usefulness...

Watch this space!! (yeah I know you have all heard that one before!)

eric

PS Rick any chance of a photo of those special bits, and your collection?

Not to worry. There is life beyond WWA!

Looking forward to another brain twister when you get the chance, Eric.
