What is the best way to measure out a job and record it accurately?

Sorry for the long absence, no other excuse but incompetence, which I am very proficient at!

Digital camera is not the answer.....

I'd vote for a knife, pencil and story sticks.

If I am doing it, I would be doing it for myself (not for a customer) so, I just look it over and make a few quick calculations in my head and then add 20% for waste and error. This formula nearly always assures me that I will come within 50% of the actual cost.

I work the same as Bob W but haven't been able to get to 50% of the actual cost. I must be miss figuring somewhere.

Hey Eric,

I'll vote along with newtooth and say,
"Use a story stick".

I sketch it up, put on a few dimentions (sometimes to scale even) and deside in my head about joints. Go get some wood and work one section at a time until it is done.
I will admit that I made a mistake today. I added 3/4" instead of subtarcting 3/4" on a face frame. First time that has ever happened! :D
Yep, I ran out of wood that had been planed for because four pieces were 1-1/2" cut too long!!

If I understand the question correctly, it's what's the best way (in our individual opinion) to record measurements for a project, presuming it's to fit in a given space in a particular .... space.

I'd have to vote for story sticks. That whole concept was new to me before I began building cabinets for our kitchen. The basic design was done as a CAD sketch but all the actual measurements for cutting and milling the material was done from story sticks.

Literally fool proof.

Newtooth gets the prize!! He can collect it at any time as it is a cyber pat on the the back!

Story sticks was what I was looking for. A very simple solution to many problems for all three axis.

Okay Im back home right now so I will try to post a new one from here, but the brain fog is in right now, so I will h ave to think on it (which is a real effort for a fellow like me)
