Don't know about wood but steel is done by droping a steel ball of a given weight a given height and measuring the dent made in the object and is called the rockwell measuring system.

Hardness of metal objects is measured on a scale of hardness called Rockwell. I recall reading about measuring the hardness of wood using steel ball being either dropped or pressed into the surface at a given amount of pressure. But don't remember what it was called.

The Janka hardness scale measures the amount of pressure required to embed a steel ball to half its diameter into the surface of the wood.

Right - Bob's got it. The ball diameter is .44" according to Wikipedia.
