I don't know if you are like me, but it can take some "fiddling" to get a good tight dado. I can also go through a lot of test pieces.

Here's a gauge to make the job much simpler.

I made one like that along time ago except, I used the edge instead of the face of the board. It is easer to check the stock thickness using the edge. Then on the oppisite edge, I made a depth gauge (using the widest dado stack) for setting various hights on the saw blade and/or the router table bit to get "close" on a trial cut.
