Soaking it in BLO (boiled Linseed oil). This both stablilizes the wood, and adds weight.

I cant remember if you stand it on end and let the capillary action wick the oil up, or if you weight it down under the surface in a bucket or whatnot.

Since I don't have a wooden plane, I fill mine with magnets for the same reason that eric fills his wooden one with BLO. :D

You can also fill it with a billet of brass or any other weights. My recent try plane had a bunch of lead inside to add weight... intersting find and it took me a while to figure it out

Eric gets the points today!

Normally the iron is removed and the mouth blocked with glazing putty. The opening is filled with BLO and left to soak through the wood, being topped up as required. When the ends show signs of oil the plane if 'filled'
