Sounds like the American Chestnut. Not many around any more though due to the blight .

I did read a few years back that some stands have been found and they appeared resistant to the disease.

of course it is probably something else all together!

This was a hard one as I could not give too much away. What I was looking for was American black walnut, Juglans nigra. as tom was almost ther I can let him have half a point!
