Router set up for following an edge or pattern.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :D

Tell me about the drill bit and what its function is in this application and I'll award you a soggy point...

Extended base for additional stabalization and the collar for placement against a pattern. Looks like it'd be used to quickly drill a series of holes based on the template.

But I could be wrong.

Sorry, I didn't notice that it was a drill bit! I thought it was an up sprial router bit!
Well, in that case...... considering the depth of the bit....unless that is a plunge router....which I dont think it is.......I DON'T HAVE A CLUE!!! ..... AGAIN!!!
Good luck on getting the hole exactly where you want it!!! :D

Oh wait!!! Maybe it is a plunge router!! I just doesn't look like MY plunge router.

Oh, Oh, Oh,......(doing my best Horshack impression from Welcome Back Kotter)... It looks like you are fitting an auxiliary base on the router and are using a !/4" bit chucked to center the guide bushing.....

Well I got it wrong 2 years ago, but I do remember the answer Ralph.

Centering a shop-made plate using a 1/4" drill bit and a guide.

But your story was well worth reading again.

Delta-Coyne gets the points tonight! In he standard Porter-Cable style set of guide bushes The 5/16 inch diameter guide has an internal diameter of 1/4 inch making it a perfect fit on a 1/4 inch drill bit that will centre in a 1/4 inch collet - Simple!

Just fir reference here are the dimensions of a typical PC style set of guide bushes. The length may differ from one set to another...

Internal Ø External Ø Length
1/4 inch 5/16 inch 5/32 inch
9/32 inch 3/8 inch 5/16 inch
11/32 inch 7/16 inch 5/32 inch
13/32 inch 1/2 inch 5/16 inch
17/32 inch 5/8 inch 9/16 inch
5/8 inch 51/64 inch 9/16 inch
21/32 inch 3/4 inch 9/16 inch
