Hi All,

SWMBO asked for a French rolling pin. It's made from maple and walnut scraps. I couldn't decide if I should finish it with mineral oil or leave it natural. What's your opinion?

When I told her it was done she said "it's not done until you post a picture."

Now it's done.

Thanks for looking,
-Joe

Up to you for choice of finishes.

Mineral oil is really nothing more than refined motor oil. They filter the heck (and then some) out of it. Then sometimes and a scent.

I would leave it natural if it were me. It will pick up hand oil and other things that will seal it. Flour, dough, butter, etc.

I saw somewhere about bacteria on cutting boards...wood, plastic, etc.
The unfinished wood ones ended up being the "cleanest"

I think washing it with a damp swipe and letting it fully dry will take care of any nasties on its surface.

Oh yeah,

Great job on the rolling pin. Looks great!!

I did some rolling pins a couple of years ago and went ahead and finished them (with mineral oil and then a carnuba/beeswax/orange goo I like to use). That being said, I know for a fact that I see unfinished ones all the time as well.... I say go with whichever you'd like to do as the only real wrong you can probably do here is putting on a finish that needs to cure and then giving it away before it does so (I like to give my varnished items 30+ days to cure before gifting if they are for food items)

If I were concerned about sealing the surface, shellac and then a quick buffing with a green scrubbie and then waxing is probably what I'd do now

Just my .03 (as usual I give my .02 and then some :) )

Nice job! I really like the design. As for finish, how about salad bowl finish?

For food contact items I use sweet oil. What is sweet oil? That is the old timers name for olive oil. Since olive oil does not turn rancid like many oils do.I also use it on many wooden toys for young children

I like your rolling pin. I'm just getting into turning and it would make a good gift for my sister. She loves to bake but has arthrittis in here hands. This style of rolling pin would be easier to use, just roll with your palms. If it's not too much trouble, could you give me the diminsions of the pin's profile (lenght, body od, handle end od, and distance at the point the taper starts). I like the look of the handles too; can you also include the dimensions of the pieces used to glue up the blank?

Thanks

Dan

LOL

Nice work.

Technically, it was free. Made if from scraps I had laying around

Dan, it measures about 20 inches in length, and has a diameter of 2 inches. Starting 5 1/2 inches from the end, it tapers down to a 1 inch diameter.

Thanks for looking,
-Joe

Sure Joe...but not free to me. :-)

It's terrific though.
