I built me a simple router out of scrap wood, here it is in action.

Whoa! CJ not bad! You thinking about a laminate for the top? Probably wouldn't take much.
Two thumbs up buddy.

Good job CJ! You've got all the requirements filled there. You know you could give that top a good sanding, throw on some poly and wax and it'd be just as smooth as a laminate. _________________ Frank

It'll get the job done CJ.
Take the time to round over the edges on the table and fence,
your knuckle will thank you. _________________ Bob Malone

I'd say no. Get the laminate. Try and sand that peeled fir and you'll have waves in it that can bother you forever.
Can be melamine, though I used MDO and shellac for slick on the kraft paper face. |

Very serviceable looking router table, CJ. A suggestion -
From the top photo it appears you have the plywood screwed into end grain on the legs. End grain doesn't hold screws very well. Unless I'm missing them in the photos, I'd add stretchers between the legs and about 1/3 up from the floor if they wouldn't be in the way. I think you'd find it more stable over the long haul.
Just a suggestion. _________________ Studies have shown that having a dog keeps the doctor away. Especially a large dog.
