Well I took the advice you gave me about the new shop teacher at our local high school having the students jointing thin stock without using push blocks. Sine I was teaching Chemistry at the high schol today I made two push blocks out of walnut and some scraps and took them to the school. Before the students got there I took them to the shop teacher and casually said that I had noticed the students weren't using any push blocks on the jointer. So I made them some to use or copy as a project. The shop teacher said they were" Awsome" and wanted to know why I used Walnut to make them since walnut was expensive. I told him walnut was a lot cheaper than fingers!. He seemed very gratefull. But I noticed that when I turned in my keys at the end of the day the woodshop door had paper taped over the window so that people passing in the hall cann't look inside the shop! I hope he has the students folowing safe procedure but it is hard to tell. As a side point when I told the Chemistry students I didn't know what the regular teachers policy was but I did know OSHA industrial standards and since we would be using chemicals ALL the people in the room would have to wear safety googles until the chemicals were put back in the cabinets. Not one student refused! Several did comment that I set the example by putting googles over my glasses.

Good work! He may not have appreciated what lead you to do this, but if the students are safer, then in the long run he'll owe his job to you. _________________ Frank

Don't have any idea what he thought of you donation, but, KUDOS to you for your forethought and your concern for the students safety. You can breath easier now that you have done your best to assure that the students have some safety standards to adhere to.
Again, KUDOS to you.

I guess I am just a little curious abou the paper over the windows.
I would ask one of the students if they are using push blocks now. |

Donald that was a good deed on your part. Maybe the paper over the window is his first step to more safety, that if they can't see out the window they are limited by passing distractions. _________________ If you don't have time to do it right the first time when are you going to find time to do it again. |

Safe is better than sorry, anytime. As for the covered windows, paper should not be allowed by local the fire marshall in a classroom.
As for the window itself being covered, the classroom can't be cleared during a fire drill by the hall or building monitor. Not a safe situation for me. _________________ Be Happy! |

The boy's in trouble unless he takes down that paper from the window. Fire Marshall's going to be all over him like a rash if there's a monitored fire drill and they inspect the halls. _________________ Tim Eastman

| I am more concerned about the covered window, than I am relaxed about what little I did to make the students safer. Just providing the push blocks doesn't ensure that they will be used! |
