I'm working on a shadow box for my FIL who was Navy in WWII. So the wife wanted it to be in the shape of a ships wheel. He wants it small, so I'm going with a Half-Ships wheel design.

At any rate, I turned the handles for the wheel this weekend. It was the first time I've ever turned matching pieces. I found right up front, that it takes about 4 times as long to turn the second one than it did the first, but the more you turn the same shape, the faster it goes.

The first was a prototype turned from Poplar, and the rest are production turned from Walnut.

I'm thinking, if I have enough time, that I might turn one or two more. I just have to be careful not to get carried away. It is only a half wheel.

Looks really good from here, Frank. Nice job, I can't even make two pens the same shape. :D

Thanks guys. I've actually found it to be kind of fun trying to get them as close as possible, but I'd doubt it'd be something I'd want to do for a living. Though, if you did, you'd either get really good at it, or go nuts.

awesome job-- I'm in the same boat as Bob... when I turn a pencil/pen set I try to keep the shape the same and have troubles sometimes-- that looks great! (expecially matching the end grain round overs, that had to be the trickest part to match)

Actually it's a lot like turning bottle stoppers. I even used a bottle stopper 1/4-20 UNC threaded mandrel to mount them on the lathe. I will admit that I did a couple out of Poplar to practice the moves, so by the time I started on the Walnut, I already had a good idea of how to get the shape I was after. Practice makes perfect, eventually.

Frank,

Nice work.

I use this line whenever I am asked to make something like those.....

"I am a woodturner....I don't make two of anything!" :-)

That's why I like turning vs. flatwork....much more freedom to create.

Beautiful work. I would have use this as an excuse to buy a duplicator.
