A friend from church wanted to know if I could make a wooden mug from a chestnut limb. I told him I could if the limb did not crack when it dried. He then said he did not have time for the wood to dry since the man he wanted it made for had terminal cancer and only a short time to live. The chestnut tree the limb came from was one planted by his father. So I tried. I used four coats of super glue instead of the usual two to seal the wood and four coats of lacquar instead of two. Hopefully the wood will not crack. I had three pieces I cut out for the handle and two of them cracked over night while I was making the mug so it is a guessing game as to weather the mug will crack. I have never made a mug from green wood before so it will be a test. The green chestnut turned and drilled easily with little dust. The wood actually steamed when the drills went in, The face plate I had it mounted to had a layer of flash rust on it when I took the mug off. So I washed off all of the drills I used with oil toprevent them from rusting.
