Hey Folks,

One of the advantages of living/working in an older, established neighborhood, is the mature street trees that provide shade and comfort in an otherwise harsh urban environment. Unfortunately, these same trees can disrupt sidewalks and cause problems with sewers and storm drains as they get older. Such was the determination of the City of Seattle when they decided to remove the two trees from the front of my shop (they did repair the sidewalk). So now instead of the dappled shade of a tree lined lane, my little building stands alone and exposed on the busy street.

Fortunately, the City’s Urban Forestry Division is sympathetic to the problem. So after a valiant but failed attempt to save our trees, they have selected replacement trees that hopefully will be planted at the end of this week. Our new trees will be Persian Ironwood (Parrotia persica vanessa). Although they won’t grow as tall, or as broad as the Red Maples that we once had, we’re looking forward to watching them grow.

Cheers,
Tom

I bet all those barricades aren't helping business any.
Too bad about the trees.
Do your windows face South?

Trees are an interesting thing in a down town setting and even can be a problem in an urban neighborhood.
When we bought our house (in 1970) the first thing we did was get rid of 13 bushes and trees. We still had 10 or 11 trees on a 9600 sq. ft.
lot. Some of the larger (older) elm trees started being a problem because of limbs breaking and roots getting into the sewer line and cracking concrete on the driveway. The pines shed needles and killed the grass in large areas.
Long story short, just a few years ago (10) we had the whole lot cleared off, leveled, replanted grass, added a sprinkling system AND 3 young maple trees! IMHO the whole place looks a lot nicer and neater now.
It just takes time. :)

Too bad you had to lose the trees, Tom. But the damage they can do over time is amazing. The main street in Old Mt Vernon is lined with over mature trees that require constant maintenance to the concrete pavers on the sidewalks. Slowly but surely I think the city is either judiciously pruning or replacing the older ones. Problem is here that the building facades are in such need of repair that removing the trees would reveal what a sorry state they're in.

I think it would have been prudent by the city to have replaced one 5 years ago and then the second now. This would have allowed some maturity in one of them.
