Never had the opportunity to do this and I'm too old now. Sure would've liked to once tho.

The season opened last week, and a guy w/his 3 sons from Columbus bagged a nice size gator yesterday. A little over 400lbs and 11' nose to tail. The Columbus one in the pic was caught about 10miles down river from me. Lot of boots, bags, etc. on him. :-D

Coming in at 400 pounds and a length of 11 feet, this gator is the result of an all-night tussle in Columbus.

Ronnie Hindman and his children, Tyler Free, Taylor Hindman and Austin Harris, were in for an exhausting fight. At 11:30 last night on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in Columbus, the four were able to hook the massive alligator.

After the fight, they were able to kill it at 5:30 this morning.

And a day before, a woman near Vicksburg got an even bigger one: 13 feet 7 7/8", 686 lbs - a new State record!! http://www.clarionledger.com/story/spor ... /89510896/

Forgive my being so naive but am I to assume from the narrative that you actually, like fish for these things? Or are they captured in a snare of some sort. I can't imagine myself on the other end of a rope snagged onto one of these big critters!

That's the usual way. Big hook and stout line, usually using a whole thawed out chicken for bait. Once you get him close to the boat, usually use a grappling hook or lasso them. The big ones like this are very strong, and will take you and your boat where ever they want to go. So you just kinda hang on until it gets tired. Then a .22 shot to the brain when they're alongside (which is about the size of a walnut) just above the eyes. Fun's over. Now you get to haul the critter back to the dock where they'll pick him up with a crane and put him on your trailer or pickup truck after he's weighed and measured.

It's about the closest you'll get to dinosaur hunting. :)

The season here is only 10 days on public land and only about 900 tags are given in a drawing, and none to out of state hunters who can only hunt them on private land - which get's real expensive. Changes every year depending on the Fish and Game Dept.

Dennis,
Tune into "Swamp People" on History channel. Gator hunting is what they focus on every show.
By the way, I'M WITH YOU, not my cup of tea in any way!

I'm sorry, I got that wrong. Swamp People is on DISCOVERY channel.

Well, I could see going out in a big boat with my carbine but a rope & hook? Not when the critter on the other end of that line outweighs me several orders of magnitude!

BTW, Gene, is it illegal to hunt them with firearms or perhaps even bow & arrow? Considered unsportsman like?

It's illegal to kill an unrestrained gator in Public waters. Besides even if you could, you'd likely loose it. They sink pretty fast. See this for MS hunting regs: Public waters: https://www.mdwfp.com/media/303938/publ ... intent.pdf

Private land hunting is a little different: https://www.mdwfp.com/media/303941/pvt_ ... intent.pdf

PS: I noticed that bait is not permitted in this years regs for Public waters. You've got to run them down and catch them with a snare , snatch hook, harpoon, or certain bow-fishing equipment.

Just like NASCAR changing the rules to add a little exciting but more dangerous.

Sort of. Btw, since you mentioned boots, have you checked the prices for tanned gator leather? This is also why hunters don't like to punch holes in them. Damaged skins reduce the value considerably. See this for some typical retail prices for whole skins. http://allamericangator.com/skins.html

And retail meat runs around $12-$15/lb locally.

I was told by the server in Micheau's, New Orleans that if it tastes like chicken it probably is.

Yep. Very useful critter. :) And it's not just the tail meat that is yummy. Ribs and legs are also great. Ribs especially, are very lean so BBQ technique has to avoid drying them out. Here's one recipe: http://gatorama.com/florida-wet-jerked-gator-ribs/
