Paul,
You need to come to Kansas sometime! We are known as the "Sunflower State" for very good reason.
For years sunflowers were best known as weeds.....Very pretty weeds yes, but weeds never the less.
Then someone discovered that sunflower oil is a very useful and worthy product and BAM! The farmers took it to heart and now grow acres and acres of the BIG yellow flowers.
The sunflower seeds for making oil are much different than the ones grown for eating out of the plastic bag for a snack.
I'll try to get a picture of a Sunflower crop in full bloom for you and post a 50 acre field of them sometime. They are truly BEAUTIFUL!

Black oil sunflower seeds are the only thing our birds like out of our bird feeder. Do yours attract many birds?

Can't say I have ever seen birds mating while trying to peck the seed from the sunflowers. :D
