Those of you that have just built shops, I asume that you all pulled permits.
Did the building inspectors require additional work beyond the project and other requirements beyond the code.

I was going to up grade my eletrical service but, because of the of the additions, above and beyond the service. I will not be up grading the service.

This has been a pattern with the city, every time I have pulled a permit they have added extras. New garage aditional requirments, pave driveway, planting grass (in August heat) , additional landscaping, ...

Lesson learned unless absolutely nessary DO NOT involve the city!

None required here. For anything. :-D

you are in Chicago!
They tax and permit EVERYTHING!

Several years ago (about 30 years) when I had my shop built, neither the contractor or I bought a permit. The whole thing was done and good until he called the power company to have the electrical line re-installed on the back wall. Evidently, the power company called the city inspector because the inspector was here within ten minutes after the line was up....We got fined $50.00....The exact cost of the permit that we didn't buy!!

I'm in a position like Gene, I inquired about a permit before I built my 26' X 30, shop and they ask if I was going to have separate meters and I said no it would be coming off the house service. No permit required. Eventually I will have water out there also.

Got a permit when I built my pole barn. My brother was a building inspector for the county at that time. Thought it would look bad if they found out his brother didn't get a permit. :D In my county, you can take a test and (if you pass) you can do your own electrical work. Still requires an inspection. Good for one job only. If you want to do more, you take the test again. It's open book, so it is not too hard.

I live in Amish country the only permit I need is the wife's O.K. Now building a handicap ramp in Cleveland on a mission project was a true "trip to heqq and back ". It took four months and three trips to Cleveland to get the permit straightened out!
