revisited ...

Finally after over 12 years I decided to replace my laptop. Got one of those hybrid tablet/laptop things where the screen detaches and acts like a tablet. OK, so it tries to be two things and doesn't do complete justice to either but nevertheless, I like it. But what I'm finding out -

Of course everything comes with Windows 8 these days, at least the item I wanted so another issue to deal with. So when I fire it up for the first time, I get asked all these questions; who are you, and so forth. And now that I have my wireless router set up, I figgered, what the hey, we'll register stuff as well. Of course, over time I've gotten used to a number of programs that needed to be downloaded anyway so off I go, collecting my stuff.

Now normally I'm aware that lots of downloaded material, while being safe and useful in and of itself, comes with a lot of undesirable baggage. In the form of what turns out to be malware. In particular, one called 'Key-Find' which what is referred to as a browser 'hijacker'. Every launch of Firefox resulted in my home page being redirected to their page.

Every attempt to uninstall, remove, delete, you-name-it was futile. Eventually I did a search on Key-Find and learned what it was and what it was about. Located a site with recommended malware removal tools. A 'deep scan' of the entire hard drive took about two hours.

And it's still not gone!

A new definition of annoyed!

If anyone is as lame as I am and ends up having Key-Find as a parasite on your system, here's the only solution I found to get rid of it:

Freeware but if you need it, and use it, please make a contribution to the guy's efforts.

Another one of those things you have to opt out of. My spouse and daughter just hit the "agree" button on anything, I swear. I've even had to pay shipping on Amazon because the default is not the "free" ship. While you may not read all of the legalese in the agreement, make sure those other boxes are unchecked before you accept, or you'll spend time chasing after a few WTH? moments.

I hate win 8, just starting it is a chore I find absolutely revolting. It's slow, it's cumbersome, it looks awful, did I mention I hate it.

PS: it doesn't remember passwords..........ever. So one can't remain logged in to any website. Must log in every time. There is nothing good about it.

Say in a text file named Hello or anything BUT "Password." I think the browser is the one that keeps passwords by site.

Highlight, paste as required. Keep a copy of it on a thumb drive or try a lot of guesses after a hard drive malfunction.

SWMBO has Win 8.1 from the free upgrade, so we gave her her regular desktop back. Looks and acts familiar. There are even full emulators available.

By "regular desktop", do you mean like Win 7?

Regular clickable icons in the desktop, can pin them to the bottom. Only thing is, hitting the "Start" corner gets you back to the Windows 8. She feels more comfortable with them, because it's about 90% the same as Win 7. http://www.extremetech.com/computing/15 ... ws-7-folks Hers is on a Dell tablet with touch screen, to which she adapted quickly. Though I did get a Bluetooth setup for mouse/type, she rarely uses it. The tablet is a tool to refer to what's generated at the office, and light e-mail.

While this wasn't intended to be a Win8 bashing thread, so be it. I couldn't agree more!

What is it with any 'new and improved" it gets slower and slower.

Howsomeever, I have figured out how to boot to the more familiar desktop screen rather than those annoying phone like images they call "charms". I find them somewhat less than charming.

I will, however, confess to really liking this new Toshiba Satellite 'Click' laptop. It has a removable screen that can be used as a pad-like thingie. Laptop wannabe and pad wannabe. Got real close to being the real thing.

I have been using Win 8 on my lap top (no touch screen) for over 1 year and have had very little complaints, I have upgraded it to 8.1.
The computer was running Vista Win 8 is a vast improvement.
I have used most of the verants of Windows.
My primary desk top is running Ubuntu a Linux verant.
