Does anyone have any links to plans or articles about building a homemade solar kiln?

I found the one from Virginia Tech and will probably use it, only slightly modified. I want to be able to load it from the front as opposed to the back and with a walkin door on the left side.

I have a south facing wall on my shop that I could easily build an 8' x 12' kiln against. And I've got several storm windows left over from a remodel and most of the lumber I'd need to build it. Just need to purchase some 3/4" Advantech type flooring and some fiberglass roofing panels.

But I would like to get some of ya'lls opinions on it before I break ground.

Thanks in advance,

Skyrider

The Forest Products Lab at USDA has some info on the subject: http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/search/search_ ... arend=2014

If the above link doesn't work go here and search for "solar kiln" in quotes. http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/search/index.php

Should be noted that there's more to a kiln/drying than just stacking the wood in a shelter. Humidity, airflow, temp all need to be regulated according to specific schedules for the particular species. Suggest you read about it here: http://www.woodweb.com/cgi-bin/forums/sawdry.pl

SKY RIDER: WOOD magazine June 1994 #70 has a pretty good article about a solar kiln. GOOGLE "wood magazine solar kiln" which should bring up the article. The article does not have a blueprint of a kiln ,rather an exploded view that is well annotated. HTH

Scottman had a nice one several years ago. He had some used sliding patio doors for the south wall and I think a corrugated fiberglass roof.
Seemed to work for Central Texas.
