My grandson's and I built a couple of racecars for their Awana's Pinewood derby race last weekend and both boys won all of their races winning 1st place trophys. At the very end, they held a 'bragging rights' race with the winners of the Little Kids, Big Kids, and the Adults Unlimited Class - my grandsons took 1st & 2nd in that race too.
Here's the kids, trophys, and me:

Here are the cars with our last year's winning car on the left:

My 10 year old grandson designed the left one for last years races (won all races) and also his car for this year (middle one) which also won all races. I worked with the little one on the design of his car (it's kind of like a speedrace isn't it?).

Finally got the pictures from my daughter so had to brag.

Congrats, Paul and Grandsons!!! It's great to see the younger generation following in the footsteps of those before them

That is awesome. I remember mine I cut so much wood off it floated down the track. I had no chance a 41 year old memory still haunts me :D

Mango, 2 weeks before next Pinewood Race, bring your block of wood over and I'll have my grandson's help you :-D

Note, my older grandson did all the design and most of the shaping of his cars - pencil & paper, handsaw, rasp, files, sandpaper. I know he'd be very happy to help with yours!

Yes, very fun stuff to get the grandkids in the shop to work on projects. the little one mostly likes to sweep floors and use a box of blocks to make race tracks and stuff. The big one likes to design (on paper) - and really enjoyed working on the cars the last 2 years.

I've got to make more shop time for him as there birdhouses to build, boxes to make, and maybe he can dream up some projects we could make.
