Hey Ray,

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8456323.stm

"...in the future a visit to a high-street optician to check on your eyesight will also be a check on the state of your brain."

A high-street optician, is that you? How is that different from a low-street optician?

Tom

Tom,
That is very cool.
In this day and age, if it can be detected early it can be slowed down, not cured
yet, but slowed down is a fantastic option.

Here's to hoping!

Eric

Alzheimer's was formerly a diagnosis by autopsy. Dementia has many causes, but Alzheimer's is characterized by those amyloid plaques. They can see them with an MRI, because mom had one midway in the disease progression and the shadows were there.

"High Street" is, apparently, the British equivalent of Main Street in the USA, thus the implication that the diagnosis will be available anywhere.

Only problem is that a laser ophthalmoscope costs a cool £100,000.....so much for cheap to perform :(
