We have a 12" corrugated metal pipe approximately 40' long which drains rainfall from one section of the yard. It is often inhabited by rabbits and occasionally by skunks. Today two neighbor dogs, apparently chased a rabbit into the pipe. One dog was small enough to follow, but got stuck about 10' from the end.

The second dog attracted our attention and we called animal control. Ultimately, a fire truck, county backhoe, my own tractor, and the nicely uniformed animal control guy make a big mess in the yard, but ultimately freed the dog, busting a hydraulic hose on my tractor in the process.

I am considering a simpler solution the next time the dogs show up, involving a rifle.

Sorry for the mess Jess. :(

Have you thought about a grate on the ends? Wide enough to let the floatsom through but narrow enough to stop the dogs.

But then again.... the gun could be more fun. I DID NOT SAY THAT!!!!

Any chance you could replace it with buried tile? In your neck of the woods I would imagine there are stinging and biting critters a-plenty to populate anything with a grate.

Every spring we have the animal rights versus human desire conflict as we dynamite beaver dams. They really like the head start the grate gives them when constructing a pond.

Despite the most obvious and reasonable solution, I have found it difficult to shoot anything except people as I got older. A character flaw, I admit. Plus my wife and offspring are all nature wimps.

Whatever happened to women like my grandmother, who would tell me to catch a chicken for supper, and after checking plumpness, would grab it by the head and twirl it like a baton until the head came off. My college age granddaughter would probably faint.

So I will no doubt end up spending hours fashioning a piece of leftover 4x4 welded wire into some sort of removable (because it will catch leaves, etc) barrier that will exclude dogs, but still provide refuge for rabbits.

Please tell me your neighbor has enough of you know what below the waist line to at least offer to pay for your tractor hydraulic hose and at least some grass seed or something for helping to save his beloved pets.... i mean they were trespassing right? ....they could have been a coyote or fox chasing your beloved rabbits

Next time just put on the ear muffs and go into the shop....i didnt hear anything....

Neat idea, Gene!!!! "My dog wasn't there" will never be an acceptable excuse again!!!!

I've told my neighbor a number of times that we should be painting the tails of all of the squirrels we relocate.....just to see how long it takes them to come back "home"

It will definately Get the owners and the DOGS attention. I Play Painball and them things STING...and Leave some nasty "hickies" through clothing. As with woodworking Safety equipment is ABSOLUTELY necessary as the those .68 cal. paint filled gelatin capsules are traveling around 280-300 FPS or 190 to 200MPH. So if you take aim at an animal shoot for the back end!

Why not replace the culvert pipe with an open depression lined with river rock, like a dry wash, that would help move water along in wet times, that you could then build a small arched bridge over. That would enhance the landscaping, and eleminate the rabbit/skunk home and give the dogs no place to get stuck. It'd probably look a lot nicer and cut back on the maintenance work for you.

Just a thought though.

This is a true statement,.. Dogs have owners but cats have staff.

It makes a great deal more sense to require people to have a license to have a pet in the first place! Make 'em pass a test to prove they understand what responsible pet ownership involves.

Well.... you know the old line;

"You have to pass a test and have a license to drive, but any idiot can be a father...."

If you're going to license pets, why not mandate a test and a license to be a parent? Or judging by the divorce rates... marriage tests?

Ok.. I'm ducking for cover...
