Getting out of my car on monday night I suffered a bad attack of cramp in my left upper leg. It was slow to release and left the muscle feeling bruised.
The bruised feeling continued throughout Tuesday at work and into the evening.
Yesterday morning I was awaken early (about 6.00 am) by a terrible pain in my left leg, streatching from my knee up my upper thigh.

This was so painful that I had difficulty putting my foot on the floor. Bending my knee is near impossible... I even had to get help from my wife just to get my shoes and socks on.

Getting in the car was difficult and I am thankful that my Honda CRV is fairly high off the road.

A trip to my GP was in order.

We concluded between us that I must have had a massive cramp durring the night which has badly strained my upper thigh muscle.

Treatment... Quinine Bisulphate to combat the crampsto be used long term :(
Ibuprofen as an Anti-Inflammatory to help the muscle recover.

Other than that.... just wait for recovery :(

Very little progress today. Still very painful. Cann't sit in a normal chair. Perched on a moderately high kitchen stool while I type this ... but that makes the table too low and is making my back ache :(

It's so frustrating.. the weather was reasonably fine today and I'd planned to get on with some more on the workshop ...... no chance

Supposed to be going to a party tonight... don't know if we'll get there.

Ray

Hey Ray,

I feel for you man, muscle spasms can be agony. Last year this time, I was in physical therapy for back spasms. One thing that worked for me in the short term was, surprisingly, a valium derivative. I hated taking it because I wasn't able to do anything I enjoyed while I was on it, but it did relieve the spasms.

Difference of opinion, I guess. http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/ne ... leg-cramps It's not a good choice for folks with arrhythmias, that's for sure.

Might have been the cause of a couple of calls I was on.

Ray, take care of yourself, bad backs, leg muscles, and foot problems are at our house too, they can make the slightest movement miserable.

Ray,

A co-worker of mine traveled with me to Hawaii several years ago when I was supporting the Subs in Pearl Harbor.

Day after arriving he started to complain about leg cramps. He is/was a runner and he just figured he twisted something when jogging. Well, we finish up for the day and head back to the hotels to get cleaned up for supper. His pain stayed with him and was getting worse.

We decided it was weird enough to warrant a trip to the ER at Tripler Army Hospital on Oahu.

Turned out he had a blood clot that probably formed from or was loosened by the airplane ride out there (I'm not a medical guy). He ended up spending several days in the hospital and now is on blood thinners.

I guess if the clot hits your lungs or heart it could take you out for good.

Don't want to scare you just something you should be aware of.

In 1985 when my Dad was living with me and didn't make it to the ER.

Be careful Ray.

You might consider a test on yourself to determine if you're predisposed to clots which can lead to fatal pulmonary embolism. http://www.bing.com/health/article.aspx ... r+v+leiden

Thanks for the heads up Nailer, Bob and NB.

I have no personal history of any clotting problems and no-one in my direct immediate family has either. (Although hy Maternal Grandmother had a stroke) :(
Fom my reading of the Website you gave NB, I should expect swelling and heat if it was a clot... neither of which I experienced.

The pain is a lot better today and I'm able to bend my knee much more... I was able to put my socks on myself this morning :-D
(My wife was looking a bit strange when she was putting them on)

Still not right yet but on the mend, thank goodness :D

Phlebitis would produce heat, pain and swelling. A clot need not lead to phlebitis, but it can lead to a PE and death, as Bob mentioned. Or even worse than death - a debilitating stroke. The reminder to Bob with a family history was to get a check for an easily treatble genetic disease.

The article for you was on our own Food and Drug Administration who pulled quinines used for treatment of leg cramps because the potential side effects were worse than the condition they were meant to treat.

A couple of codes I was on a few years back featured recent quinine prescriptions for leg cramps.

Heal well and fast my friend. I used to get leg cramps at night from lack of salt and potassium when I was a kid. One was so bad I was walking with a cane for over a week. I know a little of what you are going through and hope you can work past it quickly.
