There is a rash of virus's going around. Five recent incidents among friends and family. I mentioned this before, but can't remember who I sent it to, so new warning.

One of these problems consists of popups that purport to be warnings of trouble on your computer and want you to buy their fix, or do a scan, etc. Something along those lines. The popups continue and get worse with time, and can make your computer unusable if not caught early.

A variation has a popup that says "Windows Explorer has stopped working", and gives you a choice of shut down or restart. Choosing either gives a second popup attempting to restart. This doesn't work and the popup continues. Nothing else works right.

You can get rid of the first one with Spybot - Search and Destroy if you run it early enough. Spybot is a free download. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html
If this doesn't work, more drastic methods may have to be used.

The second one may also respond to Spybot, but maybe not. If not, try a restore to a previous date.

A scan with your anti-virus may work, but will probably have to be done in safe mode on a re-boot.

I would be interested to hear if this is a general problem, or just local to my area.

I picked up the first one you describe about two weeks ago while I was on "Wednesday Night Chat". My SIL did a clean up for me and said that he found 20 different virus's in my puter. He said they all came in at the same time! He added Malweare anti virus for me. (It is free)
That was my first and only time that I've had trouble any place. Knock on saw dust! (Im out of wood   :D    )

One of the guys from Church runs some kind of a Christian website from his house. He was having computer problems and had to call in a professional. When they got done with the computer, they had removed 20,000 viruses and other bad stuff  No wonder he was having computer problems :D

In all my time of owning a computer, being on the net since the early "90's", I have never had a virus till two weeks ago.

Don't know where it came from, or how. My virus software did not catch it, and it was updated when needed.
It is repaired, and unlike some folks, I had to pay to get mine repaired, I don't know anyone that has that experience and knowledge to get rid of a virus.

Sorry to hear about the troubles with the viruses.

If I got a "Windows Explorer has stopped working" message on my computer I would really panic.

I switched to an Apple a while back. :-D
