Hey LB,

John got it right. It's a rather obscure reference to the BBC television show Rumpole of the Baily. Throughout the series, the main character ( a curmudgeonly barrister named Rumpole) repeatedly refers to his wife as,
"She who must be obeyed."

Thus SWMBO became a sort of inside joke between Her Majesty's subjects, and American public television viewers.

Tom

Tom,
isn't it funny how memory works. My first experience with Rumpole was a book on tape, so I 'hear' Rumpole talking about SWMBO when I see the acronym.

I never knew the history of the acronym. Heard it here first.

The Late Sir John Mortimer was the author of the Rumpole books before they ever came to the small screen. The reference to his wife being 'She who must be obeyed' is itself a referrence to the 19th Centuary book 'She' by H Ryder Haggard. The 'She' in question is a mysterious Immortal Despotic Ruler who's full title is 'She Who Must Be Obeyed'.
