Gravenstein season!
Image
Hey Folks,

It's actually a little bit early, I had to buy Oregon Gravensteins  , but the Washington apples will be along in about a week. I just couldn't wait, when I walk into the produce isle and smell Graventeins, something is triggered inside me that I can' t control, and I have to bake a pie. Usually, I'm good with one fix per year, but this year might require a second pie when the local apples come in. The season lasts only about two weeks so there's always a sense of urgency when that wonderful smell is in the air.

There is only a two week season????????

Is that normal for any apple variety?

no wonder you covet those so much.

Hey Mango,

Yeah, it's a short season. For some reason, Gravenstein apples don't keep well, and they aren't grown much anymore, so there's fewer sources. The season is extended a bit by buying the Oregon apples, but not by much.
Gravensteins prefer the cool damp climate that we have on the Pacific Coast, which makes them kind of special. Farther inland, on the dry side of the mountains, is where the major export varieties are grown. Their growing season is much longer.

That is absolutely cruel
Makes you just want to reach into the monitor and grab the whole thing
I have to quit, I am drooling all over the keyboard here at work.

Wow Tom, that is one delicious looking pie! Here in Sonoma co., CA, there used to be a lot of Gravenstein orchards, now giving way to vineyards. We had our annual Gravenstein apple fair about a month ago.

Hey Kem,

Yeah, I hear about that festival every year, and it always escapes me because it's so early by our season. I don't even think about Gravensteins until the end of August. One of these days, I'll get down there and see if there's anyone in California that can bake a pie.
