Is up!

So, just how old were you when you started woodworking? That's this week's poll question... I think this one's going to be interesting...

I have dabbled in wood working since my teens but never got serious about it as a hobby until about 1999. Mostly scrollsawing. And now that I'm retired, wood working is about all I do.
I have expanded my knowledge so much in the last 4 years that I can hardly rember not working with wood! :-D
I worked in a sheet metal shop for about 15 years as a layout man. and what I did there translates to wood very well.

I wasn't a prodigy, but, was always around Dad if he was working in the shop. Growing up I did help him a lot, and got yelled at too. :-D . Used to watch him sharpen his saws, and watch him make things for the house.
Not sure how old I was, but it was prior to my teens.

At the time I didn't know it was woodworking, but my two brothers, me, and a next door buddy built lots of stuff out of wood. We built wooden minature wheel barrows (big enough to carry our junk) and even a four-wheel cart we named Bernadine.

Wow, I handn't thought of these memeories for a long, long, time. We were seven to ten years old. Thanks TT!!!!

Made my first porch chairs (first of anything out of wood) like 2 summers ago, so that would make me 51 (and wish that was something I had started doing YEARS ago!!)

Did my first home carpentry when my ex and I bought a little piece of CRUD house in 1977 ( 22 years old then ). I had learned some basic things about working with wood and tools from my dad and my mom. My ex knew next to nothing. Learned all about home construction from books and trial and lots of errors...

Can't even remember. Dad started woodworking at home when I was five, converting the coal bin to a workshop when we went gas furnace. He claimed the gouges and saw kerfs on two of the main bench legs were my handiwork. My first memories are of using a hacksaw to make some sailboats out of scrap pine. Took a lot of time to do the bows that way, but it was the safest saw he could give me. So probably five or six.

Hey Tom,

Although I worked in my father's shop from a very early age, I think that I can say that I got serious about it after I first graduated from college and had a home of my own. Pop took me to the lumber yard for my 22nd birthday, and bought the wood to make me my own workbench. I still use it today.

Tom

Did stage carpentry as a teenager and built-in a bookcase in my twenties but I only got serious a couple of years ago. Always wanted to but I spent my work life on the road.
