In the thread re: cutting dovetails in plywood, it was suggested honing the router bit. I'm curious, ... does one hone the inside face? Seems no matter which edge, inside or outside, that's honed or sharpened, it will eventually change the diameter to some degree.

DENNIS S: You are correct. Any honing or sharpening will alter the dimensions of the router bit. That being said, the amount of distortion by honing is relatively very very minor in terms of diameter. To hone a router bit, use a diamond paddle stick on ONLY the flat side of the cutter. You will probably only need a very few strokes to get the job done but keeping the paddle absolutely flat in contact is essential. In the process, maintainence is right up there with only taking the same number of strokes on each flat on the bit. Using a good cleaner to remove any residue or crud and if the bit has a bearing making sure the bearing is clean and well lubricated. If the bit is diameter critical for joinery you are probably better off getting a new bit however, sharpening can be done in a pro sharpening shop.

If it were me, I'd just order a new quality bit instead of trying to sharpen the one you have. CMT, Whiteside, MLCS, etc.

First thing i do is clean mines with some good pitch cleaner. Usually they need cleaning much like saw blades do. If that doesnt work then Ill take them in to get them sharpened. I find that my cheap bits work better then new after I get them sharpened.
