is a route to measurements, then the marking/cutting gauge is not the tool to use. It can be set from good measuring tools or even better set from the workpieces and sometimes the cutting tools themselves. Here is good poop in a scoop about marking/cutting gauges. You might even want to make one.

Making 1face and 1 edge the reference surfaces on all the work pieces usually prevents an ooops :roll:
