techniques with many applications. Both are basically veneering techniques but the differences between marquetry and parquetry can apply many ways. Marquetry is basically making an image by using different kinds of material or wood species think pictures in wood. Parquetry seems to be making geometric designs in and with wood think inlay banding or flooring. One of the current issues of a woodworking magazine details the jigs made and used by RUOBO in his work in the 18th century, and they are still relevant today. Think of parquetry as a way to make a unique lid or a box or embellish the edge banding on a table or chest. Make some parquetry puzzles for kids or as gifts. Parquetry seems to be more doable for basic woodworkers because it is all "square" work. Only a few simple shapes need to be made, a rectangle or square a diamond and a triangle all of which justify making jigs and mass production. Other "straight" geometric shapes can be employed as well.
