I think it was Charles Neal, in one of his vidios explained the difference between stain and dye.
If I rember right, he said that alot of things we buy off the shelf that are labled 'stain' are really 'dyes'. The way to tell is, if you open it up and stir it and there are solids in the bottom of the can, it is a stain but, if it is all ready a uniform color and stiring doesn't change anything it is a dye.
Not sure I have that right but, the last two times I have purchased 'stain' from Minwax, there were no solids at the bottom of the can and stiring didn't seem to chang the color and the stir stick was a uniform tint.
In either case, I cant tell if it is oil or water base, it does not say on the can.
