It is kind of obvious after some one points it out to you. :)

Another from Popular Woodworking -

Does Your Tape Measure Up?:

Now another question.
How many of you use 1 and only 1 tape while working on a project?
I do. Only because I have found differences in the measurements of my various tapes.

I have noticed the "upsidedown" numbers on almost every tape measure that I have ever used. In fact, I know that I have made mistakes in measuring because of that. Just never thought about complaining about the problem.
Years ago, I had a tape that had numbers facing both edges and broke it after just a few months of use. I could never find another one.
Yes, I use only one tape on everything to keep the mistakes in distance continious on a project. :D

I use one tape and if you ever drop it, you had better check it. It always hits on the hook. The hook will bend sometimes when accidents happen. I check mine at least 2 -3 times during a project.

Only one tape is allowed on my projects, and the same one is used for everything. And, yes, all 4 tapes I just checked in my house and workshop are backwards for this right-hander.

Now, here's a bit of knowledge for you. If you have someone who just can't seem to figure out the equivilent of the markings on a tape, there is hope!!! Some tape measures have the "1/8", "1/4", "1/2", etc. actually marked on them. These tapes come in very handy on a Habitat for Humanity job site, where there are so many workers who have never had to use a tape measure. You can buy these tapes at Lowe's and they are the about the least expensive tapes there. (No financial interest--I just buy a few of these and give them as presents for those I know need them.)
