Well, DENNIS S got there first so he gets the shavings. PAUL GAUTHIER gets some also. I didn't realize that the slick was a boat/shipbuilding tool. I thought it was used in timber framing.

SO now, when is a barley twist not an adult beverage with a slice of lime? :P

Well, my preference for barley usually includes a judicious portion of hops so I doubt that I'll have much success with this one. That said ....

The term 'slick' is indeed associated with boat building. But large(ish) chisels as you described are indeed used in timber framing. I hazard the guess that it's the terminology used to describe the tool that makes the difference.

Really appreciate you keeping this forum alive and active in the group.

No shavings awarded for this puzzler, BUT I would relish the idea of sharing a barley beverage with hops with DENNIS S. Maybe someday I'll get to the left coast to find him and share the beverage.
A barley twist in my mind is 1 spiral or more wrapped around a cylindrical form. Rounders on the dark side probably have a little more experience with the form but carvers in the straight school do barley twist also. For more details and a how-to go here http://womeninwoodworking.com/ww/Articl ... -7567.aspx.

For building a nicely detailed project which is more important the itch or the flitch?

I'll have to be quite literal here and go with the flitch with respect to project details. Reason escapes me at the moment but I'll leave it there.
