...if I made an open box that has internal dimensions of 5 x 5 x 5 inches, and I built a perfect closed box that had external dimensions of 5 x 5 x 5 inch box would I be able to fit one into the other?

Ralph

No.
There must be some clearance between the inner wall of one box and the outer wall of the other. Even 1/64" of clearance would be enough in a "pefect world" to give some relief.
You can not put two things (in this case surfaces of the box walls) in the exact same space.

Well, it appears, to me, that the operative phrase here is 'perfect world. Which in my view means there's no such thing as friction, that two surfaces can essentially occupy the same plane.

So I'd say yes. Although I suspect Ralph has a surprise for us.

Don't forget to ask Ralph for permission to drill a hole in one of the box-bottoms so the air can get out!

OK guys (Dennis and Winston) You both have valid points. :-D

HEY RALPH!!!! Is there friction and air in a "Perfect World" ? I've never been there. :D

I still say that even in a perfict world you can not put two things in exactly the same place. :D

Yeah, I think the risk of turning this into a junior high science debate over philosophy would dictate that you've got a point, Rog. I still think Ralph's hiding something up his sleeve with this one! (grin)

Winston gets the points! I was looking for someone to mention the air displacement issue.

Ralph
