...can be cut from a piece of wood that is 39 inches long 20mm thick and 150mm wide?

The pen blanks are 20 x 20 x 150, the bandsaw kerf is 1mm.

If you want the grain oriented in the long direction...

Cut it lengthwise first:
150/21 = 7 990 mm long pieces + scrap

990/151 = 6 blanks per rod + scrap

Total of 42 blanks!

Pen blanks cut from wood are long -grain so the should not be cut across the wood. I am not sure that soaking cross - grain blanks in glue would work either, but it's a novel idea. :D
