Trees are tough suckers. They can withstand quite a bit of abuse and environmental trials and tribulations.

However, sometimes the smallest fungus, insect or other parasite can lay waste to entire species of trees, driving them to the brink of extinction.

There are a few notable problems with some or our most beloved woodworking species. Can you name the diseases/parasites/blights that have attacked/are threatening these species:

Castanea dentata

Ulmus americana

Fraxinus americana

Quercus spp.

Bonus points.... can you name some other diseases that are out there among the trees?

Hey Tom,

Out west here, there's the Pine Bark Beetle, laying waste to vast tracks of forests. The worst part is that the dead and dying trees are tinder for devastating fires that can take out healthy trees.

The paradox of the situation is that regular forest fires kill off the beetle, and keep it in check. The US Forest Service's policy of fire suppression over the past few years has allowed the beetle to spread and create a problem of tragic proportions.

End of rant.

Sorry,
Tom

OK, Tom, I'll give it a go:

Castanea dentata -- American Chestnut--devastated by the Chestnut Blight

Ulmus americana -- American Elm -- devastated by the Dutch Elm Disease

Fraxinus americana -- White Ash -- Emerald Ash Borer

Quercus spp. -- Fagaceae Oak, that is a member of the Beech Family -- Beech Blight Aphid

Bonus points.... can you name some other diseases that are out there among the trees?

Oak Wilt -- affects red, white and live oaks. It affects wounded oak trees and kills thousands of oaks per year. There is no cure.

There's many other diseases, but I chose the one that affects one of my favorite woods--the oak family.

OK, Verna, little miss know-it-all... I'll give you 3 3/4 points...

The Quercus genus denotes all members of the oak family, the Fagaceae genus is for beeches...

However, I was looking for Oak Wilt for the oaks... so you should be doing the happy dance, just like this Weasel who is listening to Copacabana on the ranch's hi-fi stereo:

Good job!

Hey Tom,

Oops!
Verna was actually correct on that one.
The Fagaceae are the family of beeches (taxonomic families are always plural) which includes both the Quercus (oaks) and the Fagus (beeches) genera.

(no charge for being big Mr. know-it-all) :D
