We adopted a three-legged cat. Needless to say, he's not as agile as other cats, so he needs some help getting places. I'm making a stool (for lack of a better description) so that he can jump onto the bed. It will look like this:

Image

about 15" tall, 16" wide, 12" deep. The top will be padded and covered with fabric.

Here's the glueup for the sides.

That's Port Orford cedar. A bit soft in terms of durability, but easy to plane and I had it in my stash.

Here's the first side after planing:

For the inner curve I used a curved plane I made a number of years ago for another coopered project. The throat is too wide, but it does work.

Wow Doc! Don't know if I like the stool more than the plane...but Both are inspirational. Needed That. That cedar is a rare commodity...must really be a special feline!
Thanks,
Don

The apron and spreader will be attached with mortise and tenon joints. Rather than curve the ends around the tenons to match the curved face, I've chosen to route flats in the curved vertical parts to accommodate the tenons. This is done with the router using templates and a bushing.

First cut the flats for the aprons:

Then route the mortise itself:

And finally cut the big mortise for the stretcher:

The flat is cut after the mortise in this case by enlarging the opening in the template.

I'll spare you pics of chopping out the corners - nothing special there. Likewise, you've seen lots of pics of how to cut tenons. In this case I cut them using both the table saw and the bandsaw.

The glue-up was quite easy - just three clamps and not many pieces to manage.

When clamping on curved surfaces you have to use blocks to keep the clamp faces perpendicular to the clamping direction

It's in the shop right now with the final coat of finish drying.

Great build. Love the curved sides. Thanks for sharing.
